IACUC Inspections
Preparation Checklists
To support laboratories in preparing for IACUC semi-annual inspections, two targeted checklists are available. These tools are designed to help research teams confirm readiness in advance of inspections and ensure compliance with animal care and use protocols.

DAR Facility Spaces
For researchers who house animals in DAR-managed facilities or use DAR procedure rooms
The Facility Inspection Ready Checklist focuses on:
- Cage card accuracy and housing documentation
- Post-operative monitoring records
- Hazard labeling (biohazard/chemical)
- Drug, supply, and disinfectant expiration tracking
- Special diet storage and labeling
- Aquatics water quality records (if applicable)
- Anesthesia vaporizer calibration (within 2 years)
- Cleanliness of anesthesia and euthanasia chambers
Lab Spaces (Non-DAR Housing & Procedure Areas)
For researchers conducting animal procedures in laboratory spaces:
Please ensure that a knowledgeable designee, listed on the applicable approved protocol(s), is available to meet and accompany the inspection team, and inform the IACUC office in advance of the designated individual.
- Proper labeling of drugs, chemicals, and supplies
- Removal of expired materials
- Annual Animal Refresher Training confirmation
- Protocol and SOP availability
- Posting DAR contact information and Animal Welfare Reporting Instructions
- Surgery and anesthesia documentation (if applicable)
- Euthanasia flow rate compliance
- Overnight housing records (temperature, humidity, health checks)
Best Practice Recommendation
We encourage labs to review the appropriate checklist routinely—not only prior to inspection—to maintain continuous compliance and readiness.
